Good to Know
Grain Direction
The timber has a natural grain direction. This can be horizontal or vertical, depending on how the sheets are cut.Joint Prominence
There may be joins in the wood veneer (as wood strips may only be so wide). These are typically minor in appearance.Edge Appearance
The side of the veneer will show the MDF core. If this is an issue, consider opting for solid wood if it's an option (only available for vector file orders). Cut edges may be darker than solid wood due to the high resin content of the MDF layer.Natural Finish Surface
This is a natural material; it may require some hand finishing with some fine sand paper to smooth out the timber. As is the nature of wood, appearance features like grain patterns, knots, etc, are part of what makes this material beautiful. Not Suitable for Paint Fill
Paint fill technique (as we describe using on acrylic) isn't suitable for this material (because the tape doesn't stick as firmly to the surface, causing paint to 'bleed' out and adhere onto other areas). Paint directly over the surface instead. As with trying any new technique, consider testing on a sample swatch.Recommended Uses
- Can be easily painted or varnished after cutting.
- MDF core means it is very stable (no warping) and allows for larger sheet widths compared with solid timber.
- Consider the end product suitability to the material. Timber doesn't lend itself well to being wet/dried repeatedly, so products that are commonly removed (e.g. necklaces) can offer longevity for customers (when compared to something like earrings, which some people choose not to remove regularly once in).
More Information
- Cuts well and leaves a clean, smooth edge line.
- Engraves well and can hold fine details.
- Comes with a protective tape coating that will need to be peeled off.
- It is difficult to capture colour correctly; allow for slight variation from monitor to reality.
